Australasian Sound Recording Aassociation Conference 2006 "Listening"
National Film and Sound Archive Theatrette, McCoy Cct Acton, ACT
23rd August 2006 - 25th August 2006

"Listening looks easy, but it's not simple. Every head is a world." --
Cuban Proverb
The act of listening is essential to appreciation of radio, oral
history, forensic audio, folklore, music and sound art, but what is
listening? Is it a natural ability to be nurtured, a skill to be taught,
or a state of mind? Listening is fundamental to sound creators,?
practitioners and audiences; how do our institutions support the
development of listening and provide opportunities to foster the
listening experience? Is listening a dying art, or has our approach to
listening evolved as society becomes more media rich?
Speakers include Sound Artists, Somaya Langley and Ian Blake, Historians
using and creating oral history audio materials, such as Prof. Peter
Read, linguist Dr Johanna Rendle-Short considers listening and archival
sources, Grace Koch presenting the AIATSIS Alice Moyle website,
indigenous performer, archivist and elder, Joe Neparrnga Gumbula from
the Galiwin'ku Knowledge Centre will give the Alice Moyle Memorial
lecture, and many more. The draft program is available on the ASRA
website http://home.vicnet.net.au/~sound/events/con2006prog.htm
"If we have listening ears, God speaks to us in our own language,
whatever that language be" - Mahatma Gandhi
