Californian artist Phillip Ross, has been in Western Australia as an artist in
residence at the collaborative art and science research lab, SymbioticA, for
the past three months. He is giving a talk in Melbourne at the Spatial
Information Architecture Laboratory, RMIT University, at 5pm this Wednesday the
4th.
RMIT City Campus, Building 9, Level 2, SIAL - Room 9.2.52.
Talk Title: Life Indoors
In this lecture visiting scholar and artist Philip Ross will present the social
and physical development of controlled environmental spaces, from the seasonal
citrus gardens of 17th century French court society to the technologically
advanced growth chambers used in contemporary biomedical laboratories. These
architectural spheres of domestication have had an enormous effect on the
distribution and evolution of numerous life forms, including, and perhaps most
profoundly, the human animal.
Philip will present the evolution of his own artwork, which consists of
transforming a variety of living species into sculptural artifacts that are at
once highly crafted and naturally formed, skillfully manipulated and sloppily
organic. Mr. Ross is based in the Bay Area of California, where he teaches
courses on art, technology, and philosophy at Stanford University and the
California College of the Arts.
